John Henry Hargreaves, Age 21

Private, 39531, 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment.

Worcestershire Regiment.
Worcestershire Regiment Cap Badge.

John was the son of James & Mary Hargreaves of 3 Moor Farm Cottages, Dawley.

He had originally enlisted into the 4th KSLI in November 1914 but was later transferred to the Worcester's with whom he was serving with when killed in action on the 2nd November 1916 during the day-to-day attrition that was the Ypres salient a German trench mortar shell exploding in the trench next to him. John had been in France since the start of 1916.

A letter received by his parents from his regimental chaplain gave them the following details; "As the chaplain attached to the 3rd Worcester Regt it is with deepest regret and sympathy that I have to give you the sad news of the death in action of your son 39531 Pte John Hargreaves, which took place last night, 2nd Nov: Your son was in the trenches when a trench mortar bomb exploded killing him instantly. He can have suffered no pain. I buried him this afternoon in a beautiful little cemetery just behind the trenches and a handsome wooden cross is being erected over his grave. The C.O, his Officer and two comrades all send their sympathy. I know well what a terrible blow this must be to you and pray that God may give you the strength to bear it and to look forward to a happy union in his good time, and that you may be comforted for your son died nobly for King and Country"
